Why Can One Smell Bring Back a Memory From 20 Years Ago?
Have you ever caught a familiar perfume in a crowd and suddenly remembered someone you haven’t seen in years? Maybe it was your mother’s favourite fragrance, the perfume you wore on your first date, or a scent that reminds you of a holiday from long ago. One moment you’re going about your day. The next, you’re remembering a place, a person or a feeling you thought you’d forgotten. But why does smell have such a powerful connection to memory? Why Do Smells Trigger Old Memories? Our sense of smell has a particularly close connection to the parts of the brain involved in memory and emotion, including the hippocampus and amygdala. When you smell something familiar, your brain can recognise it and bring back memories associated with that scent. Sometimes, those memories feel surprisingly vivid, even after decades. This is often called the Proust effect, named after the writer Marcel Proust, who famously described how a familiar taste and aroma brought back childhood memories. It’s one reason perfume can feel so personal. A Fragrance Can Become Part of Your Story Think about the fragrances you remember most clearly. A fresh, citrus scent might remind you of a summer holiday. A warm vanilla perfume could bring back an evening with someone special. A distinctive woody fragrance might remind you of a person you once knew. At Valley of Roses in Kilkenny, Ireland, our collection includes fragrances with very different characters: #77 INSPIRED BY… LIGHT BLUE A bright, fresh citrus fragrance that could become a reminder of sunny days and unforgettable holidays. Shop #77 INSPIRED BY… LIGHT BLUE → #339 INSPIRED BY… BLACK OPIUM Warm coffee and vanilla notes that might bring back memories of evenings out and special occasions. Shop #339 INSPIRED BY… BLACK OPIUM → #251 INSPIRED BY… AVENTUS A distinctive fruity and woody fragrance with a confident character. Shop #251 INSPIRED BY… AVENTUS → #415 INSPIRED BY… OUD WOOD Smooth, rich woody notes that can leave a memorable impression. Shop #415 INSPIRED BY… OUD WOOD → Of course, no perfume creates the same memories for everyone. The meaning comes from the experiences you associate with it. Can You Create New Memories With Perfume? Absolutely. Wearing a particular fragrance during a meaningful occasion can help it become associated with that experience. It might be the perfume you choose for your wedding, a special trip, a new job or simply an ordinary day that turns into a wonderful memory. And fragrance doesn’t have to stop with perfume. A familiar SHOWER GEL or BODY BALM can also become part of your daily routine and the memories connected to it. Looking for something meaningful to give someone?
